If you were online yesterday afternoon, then you probably noticed Adele almost broke the internet by revealing a mysterious advertisement for her next album. During the UK's popular X Factor TV show, Adele's voice appeared over a black screen with white lyrics - check it out here.

Now, I think there are many brilliant things about this marketing plan. First of all, this is only one of the most anticipated releases of the past few years, with the industry constantly speculating when it would actually be released. So to drop a small preview as an ad with no explanation or details immediately caused even more excitement. Secondly, the placement was perfect - you know that a significant amount of the UK will be watching the X Factor every week, so social media picked it up instantly.

But perhaps the most genius part of it, is the clip simply has her voice. That's it. No flashy music video clip. No shot of her face. No release date. Nothing else. And that's what makes Adele so great. Her voice is her signature. She needs no other selling point.
