How was this magazine started?

It was started as a thesis project as part of the honors program at Belmont University in Nashville, TN.  As a music business major with an interest in creative services, journalism, and feminism, I (Nina Small – Editor) decided that a magazine focused on women in music was something that would combine all of my interests, as well as fill a gap in the industry. Since graduating in May, I have continued this website while living in New York City to provide new features and opinion pieces.

What is it’s purpose?

The idea behind Songbird Magazine is to create a place that supports women in music and is a place for conversation regarding issues and topics of interest to them.  Our artists section provides interviews, album reviews, and other interesting articles surrounding the creative women making the music.  Our fashion section looks at what’s popular today – giving inspiration and also talking about how fashion can be a part of someone’s brand and personality.  Our feminism section talks about how feminism is viewed and present in today’s music industry – hopefully showing a range of opinions and starting discussions around this topic.  Our industry section looks at women working in the music industry, including any advice or stories they have to share.  We also aim to be a place that has general news focusing on each of our sections, so that Songbird Mag can provide our audience with up to date information and also responses to articles we find of interest in regards to women in music.
